In the early 1970's fresh out of photography school ( the Banff School of Fine Arts ), i visited a friend on Galiano Island. As the ferry pulled into Sturdy's Bay, I was impacted by the rock formations on the shoreline. I knew I had to return to photograph them. A few years later I was provided with the opportunity, thanks to the Canada Council, to spend time photographing those beautiful rock formations.
What I didn't understand then, and learned a few years later in a Sweat Lodge, was that rocks hold the spirit of the Grandfathers ( Elders ). The Rocks know everything as they have been here from the beginning of time. I understood then that that initial "knowing" that I had, was an experience where the Rocks were speaking to me.
Forty some years later, during a visit on Galiano with friends, I took the opportunity to revisit the shoreline. The feeling returned. The color images here are the result of visits to Galiano in 2016 and 2019.
I see beauty in color, light, abstractions, textures, tone and chaos.
Painters inspire me. I like the way they see the world. I strive to do something similar as I have explored the altered landscape of the "Rocks"
